Central Bank Denies Rumbek Branch Looting Rumour
RUMBEK — The Bank of South Sudan has denied social-media claims that its Rumbek Currency Branch was looted during the deadly fighting on 9 October. The bank issued its denial on 10 October, according to Eye Radio, and urged the public to rely on verified communications.
The statement is specific to the central bank's currency branch. It does not settle separate reports about damage to police facilities or other property in the town. It also does not alter the government's preliminary estimate of approximately 71 people killed, which still awaits a verified final toll. Our earlier Rumbek report →
Analysis: A rumour about stolen banknotes can cause fear and cash withdrawals even when unsupported. The appropriate response is prompt, precise disclosure of branch operations and security status, without claiming more than the bank has checked. Authorities should also release verified casualty and damage assessments separately.
South Sudan Press is asking whether the branch was open after the clashes, whether its staff were safe, and when the bank can provide a documented operational update. The denial should not be used to dismiss other unverified accounts without investigation.
