Otallo Girls Face Unsafe Journeys to Continue School

OTALLO — Families in Otallo told UNMISS that girls seeking upper-primary or secondary education must travel to distant schools in Pochalla South County or across the border into Ethiopia because those levels of formal schooling are not available locally. Mothers described fear of abduction and violence along the route, according to UNMISS's 11 October field account.

The peacekeeping mission said women also raised insecurity around homes and farms, congestion at water points and the absence of a reliable network for early warning. A figure cited by UNMISS from the Jonglei State Ministry says more than 700 children have been abducted since 2023; the report does not provide the dataset or its geographic breakdown, so it should not be presented as an Otallo-only count.

Analysis: A protective patrol may temporarily improve confidence, but a girl's access to school depends on dependable transport and safety, teachers, suitable classrooms and support for families who cannot afford a long journey. The practical response needs education and protection authorities working together, with girls and parents involved in deciding what is safe.

South Sudan Press is seeking the number of school-age children in Otallo, the nearest functioning upper-primary and secondary schools, documented incidents on school routes, and whether any local expansion or safe-transport plan has been funded.
