JUBA — South Sudan has launched its Women’s Premier League, creating a national competition for female footballers and bringing 12 clubs into the inaugural season.
The South Sudan Football Federation says the champion will receive $15,000 and the runner-up $5,000.
Twelve clubs enter the inaugural competition
The participating teams reported at launch are Juba Queens, Munuki Women, Bentiu City, Yei Joint Stars, Simba, El-Merriekh Juba, Kator, Wajuma, Malakia, Nile Eagle, Salam Aweil and Atlabara Women.
A pathway for women players
Regular national competition can give players more opportunities to develop, gain match experience and be identified for national-team selection. Federation officials also appealed to families and communities to support girls who want to participate in football.
What SSP Sports will track
Fixtures, club financing, travel, venues, officiating, safeguarding, player development and whether teams outside Juba receive enough support to compete consistently.
The test comes after launch day
The establishment of a national league is a milestone. Its longer-term significance will depend on whether the competition can operate consistently and create a reliable pathway from community football to clubs, the national league and the national team.
