Yei Authorities Report Hundreds of Epilepsy and Mental-Health Cases

YEI — County health officials reported 748 epilepsy cases and 448 mental-health cases recorded since the start of 2026. At a 12 October event, officials said 723 epilepsy patients and 408 mental-health patients remained under care, Radio Tamazuj reported on 13 October.

These are administrative counts reported by the county, not a population prevalence survey. The diagnostic categories, reporting facilities, possible duplicate visits and criteria used to call a patient “recovered” have not been published. Epilepsy is a neurological condition and should not be conflated with a mental-health diagnosis.

Service questions

County health director Simon Sebit appealed for counselling and reliable medicine supplies. We are asking officials how many clinicians and medicines are available, whether care reaches rural payams, how referrals work and whether patients can obtain treatment without stigma or unaffordable travel. The case counts should prompt service planning, not labels about the people affected.
