Renk Depot Explosions Injure Civilians and Soldiers; Cause Remains Under Investigation
The division commander suggests heat as a possible trigger, while a committee examines the incident.
RENK — Explosions at the SSPDF First Division’s ammunition facilities injured civilians and soldiers on Thursday evening, according to an account by division commander Major General Kulang Mayen reported by Eye Radio. The report places the outbreak at about 9 p.m. on 29 October at the Jamus headquarters.
Mayen said fire spread between ammunition stores and that preliminary inquiries had found no external involvement. He suggested high temperatures might have contributed. That is the commander’s preliminary explanation; the report also says an investigative committee is examining the cause.
The available account does not establish a final casualty total or damage assessment. It describes civilians receiving treatment for shrapnel injuries and residents being frightened by successive blasts. SSP has no independently verified hospital register, technical inspection or final investigation report.
For public accountability, the distinction between an initial explanation and a demonstrated cause matters. A reliable conclusion would need to show how investigators assessed storage conditions, the sequence of the fire and competing explanations. A reported hot day alone cannot substitute for that technical evidence.
The immediate public-interest questions concern the injured, any continuing restrictions and official clearance of affected areas. Residents should rely on current local emergency instructions; this report does not declare the surrounding area safe or provide a route through a potentially hazardous site.
The committee’s findings should identify the established cause, the extent of losses and any corrective steps. Until that record is released, describing the incident as a proven attack, sabotage or conclusively heat-induced would go beyond the evidence available for this edition.
