Violence affecting humanitarian workers and contractors has risen sharply in South Sudan during 2026, adding another layer of pressure to an already severe humanitarian emergency.
The UN humanitarian coordinator said at least 36 aid workers and contractors had been killed by mid-August. More than 450 incidents affecting humanitarian personnel and assets were recorded between January and July.
Access consequences
Attacks, intimidation and insecurity can force organizations to suspend movement, reduce staff presence or withdraw from areas where communities depend on humanitarian assistance.
Why this matters
The people most directly affected are communities that lose access to food, health care, protection and other essential services when humanitarian operations become unsafe.
