ABYEI — The confirmed death toll from the 15 September violence at Amiet Common Market has risen to 40, according to UNISFA, with more than 100 people reported injured. Earlier official reporting had put the toll at 26 dead and 82 injured.
UNISFA says the security situation is relatively calm but remains fragile. The mission has reinforced its presence and patrols, while traditional and community representatives continue efforts aimed at preventing renewed violence.
Market activity had not resumed at the time of the latest reporting. Amiet is an important commercial centre serving communities in and around the disputed Abyei area, making prolonged closure a concern for trade, livestock markets, food access and household livelihoods.
What remains unconfirmed
The available information does not establish responsibility for initiating the wider violence, provide a verified civilian-versus-combatant casualty breakdown, or establish the outcome of any investigation. SSP will continue to distinguish confirmed casualty figures from unresolved questions of responsibility.
