Two Ethiopian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan were killed when unidentified armed individuals ambushed a patrol travelling to Pajut in Jonglei State on 24 August 2026.
UNMISS said three other Ethiopian peacekeepers, two South Sudanese police officers and two civilian staff members were injured. A Quick Reaction Force was deployed to secure the area and assist the wounded.
Calls for accountability
The UN mission condemned the attack and called for a prompt investigation. The UN Secretary-General also condemned the ambush and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.
The deaths and injuries are confirmed by UNMISS and independently reported by the Associated Press. No armed group had publicly claimed responsibility at the time of the cited reporting.
